FOR BUSINESS: HOW DO WE RATE?

Ratings are based on multiple datasets tailored to a New Zealand environment. We partner with The George Institute and have access to the FoodSwitch database, which holds data on every food product sold in New Zealand.

We rate only within category, so ratings are not the sustainability of lentils versus cheese, but instead lentil brand versus lentil brand, and cheese brand versus cheese brand.

We rate on both product and packaging, on the axis of carbon footprint.

We ask companies for ingredient provenance information, this information is fed into the datasets that we are using to provide an accurate window into the carbon footprint of the product.

Businesses may choose not to supply this information to us. If this is the case, we will rate conservatively based on global averages. This will mean that companies who do not supply ingredient information may be rated lower than companies who do.

We will publicise the brands that refused to supply information to us.

LOCALLY MADE AND PRODUCED FOOD IS GOOD FOR THE PLANET. WE SHOW THE MARKET WHICH BRANDS ARE TRYING TO DO THE RIGHT THING.
